What Is the Annecy International Animation Film Festival?

The Annecy Festival is widely regarded as the world’s largest and most prestigious event, especially for the animation industry. Founded in 1960 in Annecy, France, the festival has spent more than six decades showcasing the very best of global animation and shaping the industry’s future. Initially conducted every two years, the festival became an annual event from 1998 onwards. The festival features an extraordinary range of content, including feature films, short films, television productions, commissioned works, immersive experiences, and virtual reality projects. Alongside prestigious competition screenings and world premieres, attendees can enjoy open-air screenings by Lake Annecy, industry conferences, networking events, and exclusive presentations from some of the world’s leading studios.

What is Mifa

Short for the International Animation Film Market (Marché International du Film d’Animation), it is the business counterpart to the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. Held alongside the festival each year, Mifa brings together animation professionals from across the global animation industry. It covers 7,000 m² across two floors, hosting over 975 exhibiting companies from 118 countries, with 18,200 accredited attendees. While Annecy celebrates the artistic side of animation through screenings and competitions, Mifa serves as the industry’s primary marketplace where ideas, projects, partnerships, and careers take shape.

Annecy 2026 & Mifa 2026

Annecy 2026’s “Animated Thrills & Chills” theme invites audiences to discover the excitement and creativity of animation across every genre. It will take place from 21 to 27 June 2026, opening with a special preview of Minions & Monsters, a film from Illumination. This year’s festival will also honour animation pioneers Mike Judge and The Brothers Quay with the prestigious Honorary Cristal awards for their outstanding contributions to the medium. It showcases the growing strength of global animation, featuring feature films from 26 countries, alongside competitions for short films, TV productions, graduation films, and commissioned works. The festival will also host exclusive previews, world premieres, and studio presentations from industry leaders including Disney, Pixar, LAIKA, Aardman, Warner Bros., Netflix, and Adult Swim, making it one of the most anticipated events on the global animation calendar.

Mifa 2026 takes place from 23 to 26 June and introduces three new themes alongside its core programme. Mifa AI is an exclusive programme entirely devoted to artificial intelligence in the animation sector. It includes conferences, round tables, demonstrations, and practical workshops covering the technological, creative, ethical, and environmental challenges of AI, as well as new possibilities in workflows and automation. Mifa Invest, also new for 2026, brings together animation and investment stakeholders for a day of workshops, networking lunches, and investment preparation sessions, helping studios, start-ups, and investors better understand the sector and identify real opportunities. Mifa Cross IP serves as a springboard for developing and adapting universes and narratives with significant international appeal, bringing together various creative industries. Its new Cross IP Area, located at the heart of the Mifa, is designed to unite diverse storytelling formats – including video games, immersive works, and publishing – and promote the adaptation and growth of intellectual properties. Mifa Online also returns as a new accreditation type, allowing remote participants to follow trends, access an exclusive video library, and connect with professionals and companies in the directory.

Prayan’s Journey Through the Annecy Festival 2025

Attending the Annecy International Animation Film Festival and Mifa 2025 was far more than a business trip for the Prayan team. It was an opportunity to be part of a global community united by creativity, storytelling, and a shared passion for animation. Throughout the week, we connected with creators from Japan to Brazil, producers from Europe to Africa, and storytellers exploring everything from cultural heritage and folklore to emerging technologies and forward-looking narratives. Despite their diverse backgrounds and perspectives, everyone shared a common belief in animation’s ability to inspire, educate, and connect people across borders. At Mifa, we participated in pitching sessions and numerous B2B meetings, showcasing our work to studios, producers, and publishers from around the world. The feedback we received was both encouraging and insightful, leading to early conversations around educational animation projects, children’s IP development, and explainer video collaborations for global NGOs and startups. Beyond the meetings, Annecy offered countless moments of inspiration through open-air screenings, immersive showcases, and exposure to storytelling styles shaped by different cultures. We returned home with more than business cards. We brought back new ideas, meaningful friendships, and renewed energy. While many discussions are still in their early stages, the experience reinforced something we have always believed: great storytelling knows no boundaries.
