With their extensive animation library, streaming services have quickly become the preferred method of entertainment for people all over the globe. A condition known as “subscription fatigue” is plaguing viewers due to the proliferation of subscription-based platforms. With so many options, animation creators now face the triple whammy of trying to stand distinct, win over devoted audiences, and stave off the inevitable Hopper Stoppers.
Getting a Handle on Subscription Fatigue:
Envision yourself navigating through an infinite number of animated shows, all competing for your attention. Exclusive titles and varied libraries entice you, but the sheer amount is too much. You join a handful, but you end up rarely using them all since you’re often switching between platforms, much like a channel surfer in the internet era.
That sums up a Hopper Stopper—a viewer who jumps around from one subscription service to another, never settling down with just one. Since viewers are always on the go, this is a huge problem for animation creators trying to establish a steady fan base.
Advice for Creators:
So, how can animation companies win back viewers’ hearts (and subscriptions) in the face of subscription fatigue? Here are a few important points:
1. Get Your Content Ready for the Digital Age:
Nowadays, making good animation isn’t enough. Content creators should study how viewers interact with their material across devices. Create high-quality, compelling stories that can be streamed on digital and SVOD platforms. Make sure your offerings are diversified and can be enjoyed on both big and small screens.
2. Pick Your Collaborators With Care:
There is a noticeable difference throughout streaming platforms. Cooperate with sites that will help you reach your audience through the material you create. In your search for an animation community, prioritize those with high exposure, promotional backing, and a dedicated fan following. Attracting and keeping viewers can be greatly improved with the appropriate cooperation.
3. Develop an Overarching Strategy for Promotion:
Make sure nobody can miss your incredible animation. Create a solid advertising plan that makes use of targeted ads, influencer collaborations, and social media. Make riveting promos, give viewers a peek behind the scenes, and design engaging experiences to get people to subscribe.
Foster a Devoted Audience:
Never forget that retaining viewers is even more important than obtaining them. Make sure your material is addictive enough to make people want to binge-watch it. Build immersive tales that attract and retain fans by encouraging community interaction and actively listening to fan input.
Where Animation Is Headed:
To succeed in the ever-changing digital world, animation makers must be able to handle subscription fatigue. The business is going through a period of transition. To keep their shows relevant in the ever-growing streaming entertainment industry, animation studios may convert Hopper Stoppers into devoted fans by captivating content creation, smart partner selection, and efficient marketing campaigns.
Having the most shows isn’t important; what matters is having shows that your audience enjoys. Animation producers may make engaging, motivating, and entertaining material by listening to their audience and responding to current developments in the industry.
We were genuinely engaged in the outcome of the short film Oscar event this year and were anxious to learn who would take home the prize. We tracked the progress from the shortlists to the nominations, offered our own voter’s guide, looked at the trends, and made predictions. We even found a moment to catch up with a few past winners for an illuminating conversation about their Oscar experience.
Finally, the wait has come to an end. So without further ado, here are the 95th Academy Award winners for Best Animated Short Film, Best Documentary Short Film, and Best Animated Feature.
BEST ANIMATED SHORT FILM
THE BOY, THE MOLE, THE FOX AND THE HORSE BY PETER BAYNTON & CHARLIE MACKESY
An enchanting story “The Boy, the Mole, the Fox, and the Horse” with a star-studded voice cast and opulent hand-drawn animation, won Apple its first animated short Oscar. Based on the book by Charlie Mackesy, this heartwarming, classically animated movie tells a tale of generosity, friendship, courage, and hope for audiences of all ages. The fascinating adventure follows the unusual fellow travelers of a child, a mole, a fox, and a horse—who are all on the same quest to find their way home.
BEST DOCUMENTARY SHORT FILM
“The Elephant Whisperers” emerged as the winner at the 95th Academy Awards making it a maiden victory for India in the Documentary Short Subject category. A couple from south India named Bomman and Bellie dedicate their entire lives to raising Raghu, an orphaned baby elephant, creating a unique family in the process.
BEST ANIMATED FEATURE
“Animation is cinema. Animation is not a genre. Animation is ready to be taken to the next step. Keep animation in the conversation.” Says Guillermo del Toro as ‘Pinocchio’ Wins Animated Feature Oscar.
The victory gave Netflix its first Oscar in the category while making del Toro the first director to win best picture, director, and animated feature.
Del Toro receives his third Oscar for the stop-motion version of Carlo Collodi’s famous book. He previously won the Best Director and Best Picture Oscars for his 2017 film The Shape of Water. Using visual imagery influenced by Gris Grimly’s artwork, Pinocchio reinvented the well-known story of a wooden puppet brought to life. The toy kid is enlisted into the military since the tale unfolds in pre-World War 2 fascist Italy. In the film, which also stars Ewan McGregor as Sebastian J. Cricket and David Bradley as Geppetto, Gregory Mann voices Pinocchio.
BEST ORIGINAL SONG
In the Best Song category, Naatu Naatu from SS Rajamouli’s RRR won the Oscar. Naatu Naatu beat a slate of heavy-weight competitors – Lady Gaga’s Hold My Hand from Top Gun: Maverick, Rihanna’s Lift Me Up from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, This Is A Life from Everything Everywhere All At Once, and Applause from Tell It Like A Woman. The first Indian song to win this coveted prize was Jai Ho from Slumdog Millionaire in 2009 in the same category. This is the second Indian song to accomplish so.
Prayan Animation is proud of all the Oscar champions and extends its best wishes to the entire animation community to keep growing by leaps and bounds.
“Design a greener world before it becomes a dream for our next generation!!!”
This 10th year seems very refreshing as well as special in many ways where we decided to release our short film: “Dreams” on Earth Day April 22nd. Why this particular Date? The question seems logical: Yes, we took this date purposefully as our short film’s storyline, and Earth has a strong interconnection. So it will be extremely cerebral to release our dream project on that particular date.
Dreams Animation Short Film Synopsis
Dreams; the concept parented from the dream of one of our creative encephala, that shows a minuscule action done by a small girl made a huge difference in the World Scenario.
That millisecond’s duration of a beautiful dream destroyed the sleep of our genius for days, which later transmuted into a beautiful short story. With the magical efforts of our team that Story transfigured into a wonderful and enthralling animation short film.
There is one big problem that occurs when movies come up as a sequel or summary of a previously successful series. This problem is expectations. Watching series, people get used to a certain Universe and the course of events in it. When they come to watch a full-length movie, they mostly just expect a very long episode of the same series they have been following for a while. That was mostly what happened to Demon Slayer, the Movie: Mugen Train’, and became a reason why so many viewers claim that it has missed its point.
Creators often feel differently about the whole idea of a movie release. They try to offer us an alternative view of habitual characters, their images, and the course of events. It seems like it was exactly the Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train case.
Technically, the idea of putting Tanjiro and his friends, those pretty vulgar characters, in the middle of the story is absurd. Therefore, they are assigned to work with Rengoku, one of the nine strongest hunters in their organization. However, as long as the story goes on, the heroes understand that raw power is simply not enough to solve the train’s mystery.
The biggest risk of the movie was to put a strong character like Rengoku in the middle of the storyline and make him solve the whole mystery. On the one hand, it would have been pretty logical and expectable, but on the other hand, it basically makes all the rest characters meaningless and kills the whole story.
Instead, the creators decided to move from within, providing each character with his own storyline and an opportunity to make an impact on the overall scenario with a meaningful act—moreover, the explanation of why Inosuke, not the far more powerful Rengoku, makes the clincher.
Moreover, the character’s personal storylines don’t only reveal and justify the movie’s overall course of events but describe each character’s personality through their deepest desires and sacrifices they make on the way. And while some of them are used as comic movie classics for the series, others manage to reveal the grades of Tanjiro and Rengoku’s true personalities that we might not have witnessed before.
The movie also uses the whole potential of metaphors and symbolism in the story through the heroes’ visions and imagination moves. For example, Tanjiro’s peaceful summer landscape with a serene lake is the most vivid embodiment of the character’s nature that we might have seen before.
However, Demon Slayer, the Movie: Mugen Train’ has one significant pitfall: it almost misses any chance to reveal the villain’s story and identity. This tendency is pretty surprising if we consider how much screen time and story moves were used for each particular hero.
Even if we remember the series, villains got a clear explanation and full revelation with a pretty limited screen time. We saw Kyogai, who had to be recognized either as a demon or a writer, a spider-demon Rui with his dramatic family issues.
When it comes to Enmu, the villain from Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train’, we just see pointless and unexplainable sadism. He just gets pleasure from seeing the horror in the victims` eyes and killing them. The creators deprive us entirely of any hint of self-analysis, remorse, or a background story that could have justified the villain’s actions even for himself. Eventually, critics and viewers come to a common opinion that Enmu might be one of the most forgettable villains in the history of the franchise. It is pretty pitiful as he had great potential, and social media is already full of pretty original and inventive fan-fic scenarios for these characters. We might never know the answer to why creators decided to neglect such a promising opportunity to create one of the most powerful villains in the whole culture.
The main thing that might have failed the movie in the eyes of numerous viewers is the lack of emotional connection with the main heroes. Take Rengory – a central character, does not really mean anything to viewers because they simply don’t know him and cannot relate to the motivation depicted in the story. Moreover, other characters within the story technically don’t have a reason to relate as most of them don’t know anything about each other. In other words, each character got a full-length storyline and a chance to contribute to the overall concept, but the creators failed to simply introduce them to each other and create a common atmosphere that would have united them.
As a result, Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train’ appears to be a pretty stunning animation that will definitely win over the hearts of numerous viewers. However, those are fans of the original series who will most enjoy and comprehend the plot. In case the movie becomes your first acquaintance with the Dem Slayer’s Universe, big chances, you will find it erratic and unjustified in many ways. However, it may be a great motivation for you to check out the original series.
The Netflix animated movie “If Anything Happens I Love You” not only tugs at your heartstrings but also shares an important message. The movie is the portrayal of two parents coping with the loss of their daughter. The reverse chronological sequence of events reveals at the end of the film, that the daughter was killed at a school shooting incident, highlighting the pressing issue of gun violence prevalent in America.
We find out that the title If Anything Happens I Love You, was the daughter’s last words to her parents, as she sends them the message on her phone minutes before gunshots are heard in the background.
The silent film effectively captures the characters’ emotions, but what moves the audience besides the touching story, are the minimalistic visuals where the characters’ shadows are used in place of dialogue.
The animator opts for a simple watercolor background to give the short a rustic and raw feel. The only colors used are blue, to signify the daughter, and the American flag, which carries a heavy message about the ubiquity of this issue in the country.
The writer and director of the film, Michael Govier and Will McCormack consulted with Everyone for Gun Safety, an American non-profit organization that advocates against gun violence while developing the script
With its striking message, If Anything Happens I Love You is being considered as a front-runner for the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film along with Canvas and Cops and Robbers.
If Anything Happens I Love You is currently streaming on Netflix.

Tom and Jerry is a classic animation franchise, an ultimate signature move of the Hann-Barbara Studios, and the most beloved cartoon of several generations. In 2021 we get a chance to see the ultimate reincarnation of the iconic animated characters in a new action film. Creators of this new version promise to keep the main spirit and atmosphere of the world-famous franchise, enrich it with modern animation solutions, and place the habitual characters in territories that have never been available to them before – live action.
How much has changed?
In fact, not so much had changed since the 1940s, when William Hannah and Joseph Barbera created Tom and Jerry, until the latest featured movie, Tom and Jerry: The Movie Flopped was released in 1992. Altogether, the world-famous Cat and Mouse has earned duo 7 Academy Awards for the best animated short film and become a truly iconic animated character. The animation world knows several attempts to repeat their success by copying the original animation’s plot and comic action. Still, only the original Tom and Jerry were indeed written into history books of animation.
No wonder the release of the new version of the franchise with innovative solutions and the modern vision of classic characters seemed pretty controversial today. On the one hand, critics anticipate the new image of the beloved characters enhanced by modern technologies. But at the same time, there is a lot of concern about whether this classic franchise should be placed in current conditions and whether this transformation will go naturally.
Tom and Jerry’s placement in the live-action movie is seen to be the main contraversion, but it is not as innovative a move as some of us may think. In 1988, we already saw “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” – a live-action movie, where cartoon characters existed in the same dimension with live actors and scenery. Later on, “Space Jam”, which was released in 1996, proved that the idea of a combination between classic animation and live-action is a demanded genre among viewers. By the way, “Space Jam” also gets its modernized sequel in the summer of 2021.
So what is so special about the Tom and Jerry live-action movie that raises so much contraversion and concern today?
What has really changed?
The first fundamental change that you may notice in the 2021 version of Tom and Jerry is that today the cat and the mouse are not the main protagonists in the plot. They act more like a team contrasted with a live-action character who represents a pretty stereotypical millennial character. She is the one who will change her journey hand in hand with classic animation characters. Critics’ primary concern about this plot move is that neither the audience that remembers the original Tom and Jerry animation nor the new young viewers may find the story and its development relatable.
By the way, the characters are not that classic also. For the first time in history, Tom and Jerry get new 3D looks, which are supposed to help them fit the real-life scenery. According to the plot, the new movie will not be a sequence of live-action scenes and fully animated episodes like it was, for example, in the “SpongeBob: Sponge Out of Water” released in 2021. The 2021 Tom and Jerry get fully integrated into live-action scenery; therefore, transferring them into 3D animation looks like the best solution. However, the creators decided not to go too deep into anatomical and realistic detailing. Thus Tom and Jerry will preserve most of the looks and anatomies of their classic embodiments, making the atmosphere of the new action movie similar to the one of the “Roger Rabbit” film that we have already mentioned.
Some things remain unchanged
The new movie creators claim that although they are eager to discover new dimensions of the classic animated characters through new technologies and solutions, they still treat the classic franchise’s framework and concept with great respect, doing their best to preserve the very atmosphere of the beloved cartoon.
Even though the 2021 version will introduce numerous new characters that have never appeared in the franchise before, we shall witness some classic, familiar images. The 2021 movie didn’t leave behind such iconic figures like Spike – the vicious bulldog and Butch – the alley cat.
However, the main concern was whether the creators would give voices to the originally mute characters. This time the solution looks pretty elegant as the live-action heroes carry on all the dialogues, so the viewer does not even pay attention to the fact that the animated characters remain mute. Tom does have several lines, but the creators managed to preserve the original franchise’s authenticity by using Tom’s voice fragments from the original animation. By the way, those lines were performed by William Hannah himself. The creators of the 2021 movie also picked up the classic “Angel-Devil” move for Tom, voiced by Lil Rel Howery. Moreover, Tom has a brief singing episode performed by T-Pain.
Spike and Butch do talk in the movie, which corresponds to the original franchise as those characters have never been mute in the classic Hannah-Barbers version. Spike had several episodes when he told off Tom for his misbehaviors and tutored his son – a bulldog puppy Tyke. Butch had several episodes where he was educating Tom and other characters about the romance of stray life. Therefore, those characters’ dialogue doesn’t look unnatural even for the original Tom and Jerry franchise’s ultimate fans.
All in all, we may say that although there is a lot of concern and argument about the new Tom and Jerry live-action film, the creators took the original franchise with great respect and put a lot of effort into preserving the iconic atmosphere and signature moves of the beloved animated characters. Naturally, true appreciators of Hannah-Barbera animation will remain pretty reluctant towards the innovative approach to the classics. Still, critics forecast that the 2021 movie may become an ultimate reincarnation of Tom and Jerry to discover them for the younger auditorium.
What did you miss most during the 2020 Lockdown? Statistically “going to movies” is the most popular answer to this question. Today the quarantine restrictions are partly lifted in some regions and people can even return to cinema halls.
However, the Pandemic has forced the overall movie industry to reboot, find a new approach to continue producing movies, and deliver them to viewers. Those changes might have not been that dramatic for the Animated movie industry, but still caused numerous cancellations and date changes for many premieres in 2020.
So, today we can only peek at which legendary animated movie premieres are awaiting us in 2021. Due to the unstable situation and unpredictable schedule of movie theatre openings, we still have no clear information about the actual dates and release schedule. However, it makes our anticipation even more thrilling!

2018, 2019, and 2020 have been years of OTT explosion in India. One of the factors that drove the popularity of these platforms is high-quality original content, as well as updated marketing strategies, new partnerships, surprising distribution deals, innovation, and increased consumer insight.
Growth Rate of OTT
The numbers indicate that growth will continue for the rest of the years. The OTT sector in India is expected to reach Rs 24 billion in 2121, and the country’s video streaming industry is predicted to be valued at INR 11.97K Cr by 2023.
Consumption of Video Content
Consumption of regional content has played a key role in this growth. Its demand has become bigger and bigger, and, according to KPMG estimates, the consumption of video in regional languages reached 95%.
New OTT Platform
There are also new players entering the market every year. Many of them have also expanded their spaces to regional language productions, which has made many Indians consider them as the first choice when watching videos or movies.
Animation has also driven the use of OTTs and vice versa. The animation and visual effects industry in India has been steadily gaining acceptance and has projected Indian talent abroad. In 2016, according to KPM reports, the animation and visual effects industry grew by 16.4 percent, and the number has become increasingly high thanks to the demand for animation content for the Indian market through platforms and OTT applications.
Big global players like Amazon Prime and Netflix have signed exclusive content licensing agreements with several Indian studios and continue to vigorously seek to partner with Indian studios to create more children’s content in Hindi and other regional languages.
Now, more and more children are using OTT platforms to watch videos, and local animation is a favorite not only for children in India but in the world. It is another fact that has led OTT platforms to play a major role in the growth of the years of OTT explosion.
OTT platforms and animations complement each other. The growth of one drives the growth of the other.
